Korean Monster is back in Korea!!!

Wanna know why he is Korean Monster? Ryu achieved remarkable success by becoming the first baseball player to win both the Rookie of the Year Award and MVP simultaneously, earning him the nickname 'Monster'. Even upon his transition to the major leagues with the LA Dodgers, he continued to excel, boasting a notable record of 14 wins, 8 losses, and an ERA of 3.00 in his debut year. Following his impressive debut in the major leagues, he retained the same nickname he had earned in Korea, solidifying his reputation as the 'Korean Monster' on an international stage.

Before the start of the KBO's 2024 season, Ryu Hyun-jin, who had been a pitcher in the major leagues for 12 years, announced his return to the KBO. He returned to his former team, the Hanwha Eagles, and signed a four-year contract worth 20 billion won.

In addition to Ryu Hyun-jin's return, Hanwha has emerged as a strong contender for the championship by bolstering its infield defense through FA, addressing previously identified weaknesses.

After graduating Dongsan Highschool, Hyunjin Ryu was selected by Hanwha Eagles as the second overall pick in the second round of the 2006 rookie draft and played for the team until 2012.

He became the first player in KBO league history to simultaneously clinch the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in 2006, a distinction that remains unparalleled. After going through the posting system, Ryu Hyun-jin signed a six-year, $36 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Until Junghoo Lee’s signing of a six-year, $113 million contract with the San Francisco Giants in December of the preceding year, Ryu's contract stood as the most substantial among Korean players posted.

Ryu's 99th Win

Ryu marked his 99th career win in the KBO league with a triumphant return, securing his first victory since his comeback in a game against Doosan on April 11, 2024. Achieving this milestone after 11 years and 7 months since September 2012 holds significance, especially considering his jersey number, 99.

This particular win not only ended the team's losing streak but also symbolized the resurgence of the "Korean Monster," both in name and performance, further cementing Ryu's legacy in the league.
