Are you super interested in baseball? If so, you've probably heard of the Korean baseball league. But even if you haven’t heard of it, it’s okay! Because baseball hero is for you!

Today I would like to introduce KBO to you. Don't be afraid! Most of the concepts are similar to MLB.

KBO: Korea Baseball Organization

KBO stands for Korea Baseball Organization, which manages Korean professional baseball.

It hosts Korean professional baseball games, collects information about baseball, and even trains baseball players, managers, coaches, and referees.

Korean professional baseball is divided into the regular season and the post-season.

The regular season consists of a total of 144 games. There will be 16 games between the teams, so there are 16 * 9 = 144 games. After the opening, games are played on all days of the week except Monday. When a team is matched, the game is played 3 times. If a game is canceled due to rain, an additional game will be played before the postseason.

The top five teams that performed well in the regular season will go to the postseason. It will be held as a wild card match, semi-playoff, playoff, and Korean series. Since games are played according to rankings in the regular season and the Korean Series is played after enough rest, there is a high possibility that the regular season winning team will be the post-season winning team.

Teams of KBO

KBO now has 10 teams and all the teams have their hometowns.

There are Doosan Bears, Nc Dinos, Hanwha Eagles, Lotte Giants, Kiwoom Heroes, Kt Wiz, Samsung Lions, Kia Tigers, LG Twins, and SSG Landers.

Did you notice anything when you heard the name of the baseball team? The way to name a team in Korea is a little different!

MLB names a team with hometown and mascot like 'New York Yankees'. In contrast, KBO names its team with a sponsor and mascot. You probably all know a Korean company called 'Samsung', and the name of the team that Samsung sponsors is 'Samsung Lions' because its mascot is a lion.

As Korean professional baseball is centered around hometowns, the formation of a fan base is also greatly influenced by hometown and family.

In the first year, it was launched as six clubs based on the regional connection system, including OB, Samsung, MBC, Haitai, Lotte, and Sammi, however, due to the increased popularity of baseball in Korea, the number has increased to eight clubs: Samsung, Doosan, Lotte, KIA, LG, Nexen, and Hanwha. In 2011, NC Dinos, the 9th team based in Changwon, was established. Lastly, Kt Wize, the 10th team based in Suwon was established in 2013.
